Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, May 24: Dr. Talat Ahmad, Professor, Department of Geology, University of Delhi, who has been appointed as new Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir, is expected to take charge of his new assignment early next week.
It would be recalled that Professor Riyaz Punjabi, the present Vice Chancellor, had completed his tenure on January 6, 2011 and was, since then, awaiting appointment of his successor. Governor N. N. Vohra, who is also Chancellor of University of Kashmir, has in consultation with Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister (who is Pro-Chancellor of the University) appointed Dr. Talat Ahmad from among a panel of three persons recommended in early April 2011 by a Search Committee chaired by Dr. Abid Hussain, former Indian Ambassador to USA, and comprising Professor G. K. Chadha, CEO, South Asian University and former Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Prof. S. Syed E. Hasnain, an eminent Scientist and, till recently, the Vice Chancellor, University of Hyderabad.
Dr. Talat Ahmad has rather exceptional distinction of being a fellow of all the Science Academies of the Country: the Indian National Science Academy (FNA), New Delhi; the Indian Academy of Sciences, (FASc); and the National Academy of Sciences, (FNASc). Dr. Ahmad did his Masters in Geology from the Aligarh Muslim University, M. Phil (in Ore Petrology-Geochemistry) and Doctorate from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Dr. Ahmad has also been a Post Doctoral Fellow with three foreign Universities viz. University of Leicester, UK, under the Government of India Fellowship; University of Cambridge under NERC Fellowship and the Nagoya University, Japan. Dr. Ahmad began his career as a Jr. Geologist with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and, subsequently, worked at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehra Dun, as a Scientist for over nineteen years (1984-2003). He has been serving as Professor at the Department of Geology, University of Delhi, since October 2003.
